Sign Language Legalized as First Language in Iceland

Following their parliament’s legislation to make sign language the nation’s first language, Iceland celebrated at Althingi (Iceland’s parliament building) until late in the night.

There is no other place in the world that has given the same recognition to sign language that Iceland has. The deaf community is thrilled with the news that their first language has been recognized by legislation and will be put to use for things like education, business and court proceedings.
