School Students Compete in 3rd Annual Translation Contest

quotsOn Tuesday, November 24, more than 3,000 school students from all over Europe tested their language skills at the 3rd annual Young Translators Contest.  According to Leonard Orban, Commissioner for Multilingualism, “The translation contest for young people has become a much-awaited opportunity to test the language skills learned at school in a real-life situation and to get a taste of the work of a professional Translator.”

Up to five students from each selected school were required to complete a translation test on the day of the contest.  They received a short text via email in the morning and had up to two hours to translate that text as fluently as possible from a language of their choosing into any other of the EU’s 23 official languages.  After the test, the translations were sent to the Commission to be marked and evaluated by professional Translators.  The contest jury will choose the best translation from each representing state with the winners announced at the end of January, 2010.  All winners will win a trip to an awards ceremony in Brussels to receive their prize and meet a number of EU Translators.
