Queens Libraries Expand Language Selection

The Queens, NY Library System is making strides to make sure all of their visitors will have something to read, English speaking or not. In order to cater to the increasingly diverse population in the surrounding streets, the neighborhood library system now carries children’s books in a variety of languages other than English, including Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Russian, Portuguese and Gujarati.

The Queens Library System also offers CDs and DVDs in over 59 languages. Logan Ragsdale, who runs the Broadway branch in Astoria, Queens said it was essential that “libraries provide a transition” for newcomers to America.

“Most libraries I’ve worked in have realized that to be a bridge where people learn what the library has to offer, it helps to have books, DVDs and music in the native language,” he said.
