New Books Shed Light on Hawaiian Language Evolution

Three books have recently been released about the unique evolution of the Hawaiian language. The first book examined in this article by Burl Burlingame is Mai Pa’a I Ka Leo: Historical Voice in Hawaiian Primary Materials, Looking Forward and Listening Back, by M. Puakea Nogelmeier. “Hawaiians, almost overnight, became the most literate society on the planet,” notes Nogelmeier.

The many definitions of the word “aloha” is a preview of what you might find in these books. “What ‘aloha’ means can be debated all day,” says Burlingame. “Living aloha means co-existing on a small island in a harmonious way.”
