Is your language services provider HIPAA compliant?

From medical history, to patient demographics, to billing records, medical interpreters come in contact with Protected Health Information (PHI) every day. Are you certain the private information being disclosed by your patients during the course of an interpretation session is held in the strictest confidence? Have you carefully screened your language services provider (LSP) to ensure they are in full compliance with the strict rules and regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)?

As part of the new Omnibus Rule, it is the responsibility of the Covered Entity to ensure all of its Business Associates that touch PHI (and all of their subcontractors) have taken the necessary steps to meet HIPAA compliance. Failure to comply can result in serious civil and criminal penalties, and damage to an organization’s brand and reputation. Just last year, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) imposed a $4.8 million fine to two healthcare organizations for violating HIPAA.
