There are more than 7,000 languages spoken around the world at this time, many of which are simply spoken and not written. Studies are showing the most rapid loss of languages in history and predicting that by 2100 almost half of these languages may be extinct.

Professor K. David Harrison, the director of the Living Tongues Institute of Philadelphia-based Swarthmore College says that “approximately half of the world’s languages are considered to be endangered. And we may be losing a language as often as one every two weeks.”

These appalling statistics are the result of pressures to conform and assimilate to more modern languages and ways of life. Speakers of these rare languages are being told at a young age that their language is less important and that they must be able to speak the more prevalent and popular languages.
