Vietnamese Fisherman in Gulf Fight to Not Get Lost in Translation

For the Vietnamese-Americans currently living in the Gulf Coast region, the oil disaster is especially complicated, thanks to a host of language barriers and cultural misunderstandings. The Interpreters BP initially brought in for safety and cleanup training used a North Vietnamese dialect to address the elders, which stirred painful memories and suspicions. Additionally, the closing of fishing areas have been announced on radio stations Vietnamese fisherman do not listen to, so some have taken their boats where they are not authorized.

Under the guidance of Vietnamese-American congressman, Louisiana Republican Anh “Joseph” Cao, the request for qualified and trained bilingual Interpreters has been approved, which will help tremendously with the many cultural barriers this community is facing.
