UNESCOOn Tuesday, September 8th, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) celebrated International Literacy Day with a host of global events and celebrations, including a special gathering for all the Translators of the Harry Potter book series.  The meeting, which took place in Paris, was designed to examine the role of translation in enhancing literacy and cross-cultural understanding.  Harry Potter Translators of more than 20 different languages were expected to participate in this conference, where they were invited to share their personal and professional experiences.

On November 17, 1965, UNESCO proclaimed September 8th as International Literacy Day as a way to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.  On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO holds celebrations around the world to remind the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning.
