The red shows where PA Dutch is still alive in Pennsylvania, which includes Montgomery County.

As you venture out into more rural areas of Montgomery County, it will become apparent that the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect is not dead. The Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center could have something to do with that. On November 11th they held a PA German Dialect Conversation Group.

“We decided to offer a conversation group so that those who do speak the dialect can come and chat with one another,” said Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center museum educator Rebecca Lawrence.

These efforts to keep the dialect alive are warranted because of the large decrease in the amount of speakers over the years.

“The dialect is dying out,” said Ron Treichler, a Heritage Center Friends member. “Most kids learn this language at home, but it’s not being spoken in the home anymore.”
