Linguistic Diversity Linked to Biodiversity

According to a report recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, “endangered cultures and languages coincide with endangered species.”  Researchers found that areas with high biological diversity are also home to about 70% of the world’s languages.  “We looked at regions important for biodiversity conservation and measured their linguistic diversity in an effort to understand an important part of the human dimension of these regions,” said Professor Larry J. Gorenflo of Penn State University.  Researchers will continue to examine the relationship between linguistic diversity and biodiversity with the hope of developing strategies to preserve both.
