On February 1st 2010, the First Nations Development Institute of Longmont, Colorado awarded the Indigenous Language Institute (ILI) with a $15,000 grant to support their “Native Youth Language Project: Ancient Voices, Modern Tools” initiative.

Beginning immediately, a group of 30 students from the Santa Fe Indian School (SFIS) will be trained to create audiovisual materials in Indian languages in ILI’s IBM training lab. These audiovisual collaborations will be produced primarily in Indian languages and will encourage youth to research and understand their native culture. The videos will also encourage the students to take part in articulate conversations with other speakers of the language, such as family members and elders. “ILI’s technology training and tools help make these ideas shareable,” said Jerry Hill, ILI Board President.  “We at ILI expect the new materials produced by the students will have a multiplier effect in generating more materials and in motivating their peers to create simple but powerful materials in their Native languages.”
