Gmail users can now exchange e-mails and instant message chats entirely in Cherokee, making it the first Native American language to be fully integrated into the popular e-mail service. With the addition of the Cherokee language, Gmail now supports a total of 57 languages, including Spanish, Simplified Chinese and Hebrew.

According to the article, one of the main challenges of fully integrating the Cherokee language into Gmail was translating more modern words (like “inbox,” “sign in,” and “spam”) that did not exist when the Cherokee language was transcribed. Cherokee Nation Translators and language technologists worked with Google to translate these terms. Cherokee was also the first Native American language, and one of only 40 worldwide languages, integrated into the iPhone’s operating system.
