Could Chinese be the Next Global Language?

According to the Confucius Institute Headquarters in Beijing, there are over 40 million foreign learners worldwide studying Chinese. So could it be the next “global” language? It is already the mother tongue of the largest population in the world and the spoken and written language of an economy that is booming.

The only setback is that Chinese is notoriously a difficult language to learn. It could be the tens of thousands of Chinese characters, its unique tones or the large number of homophones, but according to the Defense Language Institute, Chinese is rated one of the most difficult languages in the world to learn for people whose native language is English.
