Diwali, otherwise known as The Festival of Lights, is the biggest and most important holiday in India. Diwali itself started as a celebration of the last harvest of the season and is also a spiritual representation of the victory of light over darkness.  The preparations and rituals related to Diwali take place over a five day period, two days before the Night of Diwali, the Night of Diwali itself, and two days after. The main festival night coincides with the darkest, new moon night of the Hindu Lunisolar month Kartika.

Diwali is one of the most joyous celebrations in India, with much preparation going into the festivities. Many Indians clean their homes, buy new clothing and purchase gifts for their loved ones. Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs and is meant to honor the oneness of all things as well as the triumph of good over evil.
