Baby Sign Language Builds Multimedia Empire

Five years ago when educator Laura Berg was pregnant with her first child she began teaching American Sign Language (ASL) to the parents of hearing babies. The success of her idea allowed her to start My Smart Hands, a multimedia company that revolves around teaching hearing babies to sign.

A short video on YouTube displaying an adorable baby girl (her daughter) signing words like “water,” “sleep,” and “finished” sparked the rapid growth of her multinational company. Today, over 90 percent of her business is generated on YouTube, where she has posted more than 300 short videos.

“ASL encompasses a number of learning styles but specifically kinesthetic and visual,” says Berg on her website. She also says that ASL is a great way for babies to release the frustration of learning to communicate. Today, My Smart Hands has over 100 instructors around the world.
