Award for Reference Book on Irish People

The Dictionary of Irish Biography, a reference book made up of 9,700 biographies spanning 2,000 years of Irish history, has recently been honored by the Association of American Publishers.  The dictionary was given the award for “professional and scholarly excellence as a multi-volume reference work in the humanities and social sciences.”

Edited by James McGuire and James Quinn, the book was a collaborative effort between the Royal Irish Academy and Cambridge University Press.  Consisting of more than eight million words, the dictionary is a reference book for anyone interested in learning more about Irish history and culture, including religious figures, artists, writers and politicians.  It is the largest work ever published on the lives of Irish people.
