Animated ASL Dictionary Goes Live

In December, 2009 the Canadian Cultural Society for the Deaf, along with various multimedia development partners, launched the first-ever animated dictionary for Deaf and hard of hearing children.  The dictionary was developed to provide children with “an innovative, empowering and reliable source of definitions to the most common terms used in American Sign Language.”

Although the dictionary is still considered a prototype, the Society plans to expand the breadth of terms from everyday words to more challenging and educational terminology.  The dictionary, which is available online at www.ASLphabet.com, encourages children to interact with the animated character shown on the screen (i.e. a bunny) while scrolling through available terms with the ASL symbols and their English counterparts.  Currently, the online dictionary includes roughly 100 words.  However, there are plans to expand this dictionary to include as many as 1500 words in the near future.
