LSA Provides a Team of Spanish Interpreters and a Deaf Hearing Team to Assist the New York State Department of Labor With Unemployment Case

Date: April 23, 2012

Location: Troy, NY

Services: CART (Computer Assisted Realtime Translation), Face-to-Face Interpreting, American Sign Language

Details: LSA recently helped the New York State Department of Labor manage a unique unemployment case.  The claimant was a woman from Puerto Rico who is Hard of Hearing.  Because she did not grow up Deaf, she does not know any form of Sign Language (American or Spanish).  In order to close the case in the most effective manner possible, and to ensure a completely accurate interpretation session, the Department of Labor scheduled all possible language pairs with LSA.

LSA provided the client with a team of Spanish Interpreters – one Interpreter to interpret into spoken Spanish and one for Spanish CART.  How this worked is the CART Interpreter would listen to the spoken Spanish and then type the words on his laptop for the claimant to read.  LSA also provided the client with a Deaf hearing team – one American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to interpret spoken English into ASL and a Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI).

The interpretation began with spoken Spanish, followed by ASL, followed by gestures from the CDI, followed by the claimant reading the written Spanish translation.  The case took just under six hours to complete, but it was a success!

Skype will be used to provide the audio feed. The first class took place on Monday, April 30th. The patient will be participating in five classes total.
