Smith River Rancheria Youth Camp in Northern California engaged children in Tolowa arts, games and hunting to keep the dying culture alive. Speaking the endangered language Tolowa was also a part of the agenda during the camp.

The Tolowa language program was awarded nearly $900,000 in grants from the federal Administration for Native Americans (ANA) and was recently one of two programs in the country recognized for their innovative approach for language.

“Our language is dying,” said Chuski Scott, a 13-year-old camp attendee. “I want to keep it strong.”
